The Savannah-Ogeechee Canal was 16 1/2 miles long and allowed remote farms and plantations to access the busy downtown port of Savannah. The map below traces the current S&O Canal and includes the major roadways and Interstates that cross it's boundaries. The map to the right shows the maintained nature trails near the Canal Society Museum.
The Museum and Nature Trail is located near the last 1/2 mile section of the S&O Canal. The trails are self guided and entwine through the three most common habitats of Coastal Georgia; Sandhill, swamp and pine forest. The trails are mostly level with boardwalks over most wetland areas. However, high tides on the Ogeechee River may cause temporary flooding.
